THROUGH THE BIBLE IN THREE YEARS

This program of daily devotions is designed to take you through the Bible in three years. It is our desire to help you gain a better general understanding of God's Word.

Please understand that in a study this brief, we will be concerned with only the major emphases and context of the Scriptures.

Each day a devotion for one or two chapters is posted, beginning with chapter one of Genesis and going through chapter twenty-two of Revelation. You are free to print each page as it appears. If you miss a day, you may contact us and request that devotion. Please send your request, along with $.50 (p&h) for each page to:

LEVITICUS
CHAPTER 18

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God. 3 After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.

Here is God's protection of the marital union. Sex is meant to be a blessing ONLY derived
from marital partners.

Notice they are not to act like those in Egypt (from where they came) nor like those in
Canaan to where they were going. The land of Egypt and Canaan had been "defiled" (verse 27)
because of these practices by their inhabitants. And God said He would cause the Israelites
to be kicked out if they practiced these things (verse 28).

4 Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. 5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.

Instead, they were to abide by God's laws. He is the One Who saved them, and He alone is God.

6 None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.

It is the Lord God of salvation Who gives this standard. The general standard is to NOT
marry someone who is "flesh of flesh." That's what "near of kin" means.
Sexual misconduct is a disease and spreads like a disease.
(IE. It used to be that brazen sensual words were thought improper if on TV. However,
now there seems to be no program without at least some inuendos, and MOST have even brazen acts.)
God's design here is to protect marriage from wantonness which defiles even the holiest
of institutions.

7 The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. 8 The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness. 9 The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or daughter of thy mother, whether she be born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover. 10 The nakedness of thy son's daughter, or of thy daughter's daughter, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover: for theirs is thine own nakedness. 11 The nakedness of thy father's wife's daughter, begotten of thy father, she is thy sister, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. 12 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's sister: she is thy father's near kinswoman. 13 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother's sister: for she is thy mother's near kinswoman. 14 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt. 15 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter in law: she is thy son's wife; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. 16 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness.

Specifics are added to the general law in these verses. For instance, a man was forbidden to
marry his mother, stepmother, sister, step-sister, aunt, daughter-in-law, or granddaughter.
Can you think of some reasons for those prohibitions?

17 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, neither shalt thou take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness; for they are her near kinswomen: it is wickedness. 18 Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.

Polygamus marriage is wrong, but some here are expressly forbidden because of the evil
in them. Remember Jacob's trials and troubles because he married sisters?

19 Also thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is put apart for her uncleanness.

This law was obviously given to maintain honor and cleanliness in the marriage bed.

20 Moreover thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbour's wife, to defile thyself with her.

A reiteration (therefore it is very important) of Exodus 20:14.

21 And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.

Some of the Canaanites worshipped Molech or Moloch, god of the sun or fire. They would offer
their children to him by placing them in a burning fire! That's just awful isn't it?
But is it so much worse than the "fire" of TV today? Is it so much worse than offering our
children to the idols of society through exposing them to movies, magazines, etc.?

22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

This is a very CLEAR statement from God that homosexuality and lesbianism is an
ABOMINATION to Him.

23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.

Bestiality is also an abomination to God. Listen, this is graphic, but I feel it needs to be
stated. God looks out for our best interests. His laws are actually for our protection.
Some specific STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) have been traced back to certain ANIMALS!

24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: 25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. 26 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you: 27 (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;) 28 That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you. 29 For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people. 30 Therefore shall ye keep mine ordinance, that ye commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God.

These former specifics are to keep the people of God from being "defiled" and to keep the land,
or people of the land, PURE.
Today, we should desire to keep God's commandments so that we may be pure witnesses to the world, and
so that we may be recipients of His abundant grace. Though we are not "under the law" we are
"under the blood." And the laws of God then are written on the tables of our heart!
God's Holy Spirit constantly witnesses to our hearts (if we are truly saved) about following God's
express will. God never changes! What was an abomination to Him in former world history is
still an abomination today. We should DESIRE to walk in God's express will. And that
express will is written right here in the Bible.
