TODAY'S SCRIPTURE STUDY

ZECHARIAH

CHAPTER 2

VISION OF SURVEYOR

1 I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand. 2 Then said I, Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof. 3 And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him, 4 And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein: 5 For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her. 6 Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the LORD: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the LORD. 7 Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon. 8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. 9 For, behold, I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me. 10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. 11 And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee. 12 And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again. 13 Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

In this vision, Zechariah sees a "man" (angel in the appearance of a man) who is about to measure Jerusalem. Again, this vision is one of HOPE for the future.

The "man" is obviously directed by God to measure Jerusalem for its future USE. The promise of verses 4-5 is that the Lord will inhabit Jerusalem and will be her Protector from the world.

At His return, the Lord will cause Jerusalem to grow outside her normal boundaries until she is a "town without walls" because of the multitude of residents. This is a promise of a future coming of the Lord.

In verse 6, those who have chosen to remain in Babylon are encouraged to return to Jerusalem - Judaea. Babylon is prophesied to receive destruction, and her residents scattered like wind scatters leaves.

In verse 7, God says that the nation of Israel is like "the apple" of His eye. He will certainly take vengeance upon those who "spoil" Israel!

Verses 8-9 also deal with the future coming of the Lord. Jesus received "glory" after He was crucified and resurrected. He ascended in "Shekina glory" of the Lord. In LIKE MANNER He shall return! (See Acts 1:11). When He returns, He will "shake" His hand upon the nations, and they will become "servants." God has already spiritually shaken His "hand" at the nations, and all those who trust in Him, JOIN Him in the work of spreading the gospel of salvation. But one day, and I believe soon, Jesus will come again and physically shake the nations. At that time, He will set up the millennial kingdom and rule upon earth for 1,000 years FROM Jerusalem.

The nation is instructed (verse 10) to "sing an rejoice" because The Lord is coming! It is a PROMISE of God! It WILL happen! He will "choose" Jerusalem (vs 12) as the capitol from which He will reign.

He is God, and "all flesh" should be "silent" before Him! He is the incarnate God, in whom "all the fullness of the Godhead bodily" resides (Colossians 2:9). He is "the Lion of the tribe of Judah," (Revelation 5:5) and will rule over all nations!

Indeed, let us "sing and rejoice," for He IS coming again!
